'MIXTAPE' - Alex

AUDIENCE
'Mixtape' (Luke Snellin, 2010)

The short film opens with appropriate titling, but showing a cassette tape being wound up ready to be played. The title itself is integrated into the film and the next shot shows someone creating their own mixtape, titled 'MIXTAPE'. This will resonate well with older audiences born in 1970s/80s where cassettes were a major part of the music industry.

This film shows two social classes; the working, and upper. The younger boy represents those who live a pretty average lifestyle, whereas the younger girl represents a higher class. The audience can make these assumptions due to visual clues such as costume, props and setting.
The film mainly shows the two characters in their bedrooms - the link being a single wall between them, and their love for music. Noticeable differences include setting; the boy's bedroom is cluttered, darker and is shown to be fairly small. The girl's room is shown to be larger and everything is white (commonly used to resemble wealth) and well lit.

'MIXTAPE' also shows interactions between people of different ages. The only other character in this film is the girl's mother - she is welcoming with a smile, dressed in a black blazer (to suggest a business like figure) and considerate when telling him the girl of interest is not home.

The film was created with the intention to show modern romance between a young male and female in a non-sexualised way. This relationship is also shown in a male-dominated way - the male sets out to impress a female in the best way that he can. Through manipulation of time (slow-motion), it's indicated that this kind gesture is a big thing to him.

This film will work well with parents due to nostalgic references their childhoods, while also displaying the innocence in children's romance that is often dominated with sexual references in today's media. It's good to display this as many parents feel that children looking for relationships can be dangerous.

  1. Worth commenting on the slow motion scene and why they did this.

It is set pre digital, hencce it is appealing to those who would have experienced this. Its about first love.

    Low 3
