CHARACTER COSTUME

Our antagonist played by Kierah, is wearing a checked shirt and jeans. Casual wear suggests she's in more of a comfortable environment. Choosing this costume is actually quite contrasting with our narrative, this woman is quite sinister with what she does throughout the film, which is not seen as "casual" but her clothes would suggest she's really quite normal. >>
<< Our main male character is wearing a jacket, jumper, and a shirt. We chose as a group to go with this, as he is outside a lot of the time, which suggests it's a time in the year when it gets colder at night. He's also dressed casually smart, much like our antagonist, however, he seems more groomed than our female character shown above.

Our youngest character is dressed in a witches Halloween costume. This also shows the time of the year. This costume shows a lot of innocence from our character. >>

We are using these pictures for further references when we go back to filming.

FILMING- DAY 1

We went over to Haywards Heath on the inset day to film our scenes inside the house, and we tried to get some shots of the trick or treating, and the coming home moments.
We filmed when it was dark which highlighted the importance of lighting and the composition of shots to make sure lights weren't reflected in windows or anything that would potentially ruin the image.
We tested out and took a number of shots for each scene giving us a variety of shots along with audio, which we have now logged and transferred onto our final cut pro editing folder.
Here is a video footage of us when filming-Filming proof
We still need to film some of our trick or treating scenes which we will do in the upcoming week.

CHARACTER COSTUME

We will have 3 main characters in the story, consisting of the daughter, the mother and the father, however because of actor shortages we may have to adapt the story and alter any actors we will use as they will have to be younger.

We have an actor confirmation for the daughter, our friend's sister Isobel will be playing the role of the daughter, We will clothe her in a generic witch costume to fit in with the naïve stereotype.

As we will primarily see her trick or treating with the father however we will adapt this story to instead of being a mother and father we will have family relation ties in, with maybe the male out trick or treating to be the cousin of the daughter, and the anonymous person who will later be revealed to be the mother will be the cousin's girlfriend. The relation will be shown through a phone call from the cousin to the mother, where we will have vocal confirmation of the mother talking to the cousin saying about the daughter trick or treating, which will also elongate the length of our film, however we will have to adapt our storyboard.
The cousin will be dressed in typical clothing, both he and the girl will be shown to be a stereotypical and innocent and naive to contrast the action in the kitchen

The girl in the kitchen will be shown in stereotypical clothing of teenagers to give a shock to the audience, when revealed.

Organising the location

Over the holidays, Alex contacted Gemma Rolandi about access to her home for our film.

Gemma's schedule is a priority as we will be filming in her home outside of college hours and must consider her family.

In a conversation with our actor's mum, Isobel, she had said that her available days would be Tuesday and Friday. This is a problem as Gemma has said that her best day would be Thursday. We are currently waiting a reply from Gemma on possibly using her home on Tuesday.

We will update this blog post accordingly!

Actor confirmation

For our short film, we will be focusing around three characters. 2 older roles (young adolescent/teenagers) and a child.

For the child role, we contacted our friend Beth Gray's mum for access to Beth's sister. Isobel is an 11-year-old girl with a mature approach, and is eager to act in our film. Here is a screenshot of a conversation that took place between Alex and Laura (Isobel's mum):

We then began thinking about the older characters. Due to commitments with work, and limited time, we decided that working with adults would be difficult. If we had more time to create the film, this would be something we would consider. Instead, we contacted our friend Kierah Rathborn to play the female role. We're excited to be working with Kierah due to her involvement the Tulley's Shock-tober event over the past two years, and experience in Performing Arts within college. After vaguely bringing up the possibilities of working together in college, we messaged her during the holidays to get a confirmation. Here is a screenshot of the conversation between Alex and Kierah:

Potential Title?

We found this image on Google and we liked the idea of having it as our title sequence.
We would do this through a bird's eye view CU of the woman ladling up soup, in which the letters could appear, this could be achieved through animation or literally buying alphabet soup and visually setting up the scene ourselves. Meg had the idea of repeating the same shot at the end but replacing it with the eyeball, which would give it a shock effect.

Underwater Experiments

We began our growing list of 'things to do' by doing an underwater experiment. We used the Sanyo VPC-WH1EX camera to achieve this. The quality of the film was very high, and would work nicely for our titles. We are excited to use this in the real thing!

We experimented using watercolour paints, acrylic paints, and generally looking at what the world looks like underwater.

This is what we have learned:
  • Water colours look very thin underwater and don't look like blood due to it's colour
  • Acrylics didn't look like blood either, although we did like the murkiness of water
  • We have yet to find fake blood that looks appropriate.
